Riparian Rehabilitation

The University of Nairobi, in Association of Green Champions, initiated a tree planting exercise, planting 500 trees along Nairobi River from 20,000 bamboo saplings for Riparian Rehabilitation.

  • Bamboo trees nurseries were established with about 400 tree seedlings.
  • A second nursery was established at the Komb Green in Korogosho.
  • Virtual and on-site training on sustainable use of bamboo and the importance of the bamboo in restoration of degraded riparian areas.

Project Objectives

  1. To build capacity of communities living adjacent to Nairobi River and its tributaries to embrace the culture of environmental and natural resources conservation.
  2. To partner with stakeholders in Nairobi County Government, community-based organizations, and institutions in reclaiming degraded riparian land and increasing the tree coverage.
  3. To grow 20,000 saplings/seedlings of Bamboo trees along Nairobi River and its tributaries and promote their conservation and use.
  4. Create youth employment based on Bamboo value chain.
